$5,000/Month Ad Budget: The First Real Multi-Channel Tier
$5,000/month is the first budget where multi-channel actually makes sense — and the first where channel sprawl can quietly kill you. It's enough to fund two channels through their learning phases simultaneously, but not enough to learn on three.
The defining question at this tier: are you graduating from a single-channel test, or wasting the same money you spent at $1K, just spread thinner?
Use the Ad Budget Calculator
Tell it your monthly ad spend, business type, and goal — it'll split the budget across the right networks in seconds.
What $5K/month actually means. This is the first serious budget. At <$1K/mo you're buying signal; at $5K/mo you're buying customers — but barely enough to support a real test against a control. Meta and Google both need roughly 50-75 conversions per ad set per week to fully exit the learning phase. At $5K split across two channels, you can hit that on one product or one offer. Try to support three offers and you'll plateau every campaign in perpetual learning.
The anchor scenario: a Series-Seed B2B SaaS or a $40K-$80K MRR DTC brand. Both share the same constraint — one ICP, one hero offer, ready to graduate from founder-led growth into paid acquisition. This budget is wrong for pre-PMF startups (you'll learn faster with sales calls) and wrong for established $5M+ revenue businesses (you're starving channels that need $15K+ to compete on auction density).
Channel strategy: pick two, fund both properly.
For B2B SaaS, the split that consistently works: 60% Google Search on bottom-funnel commercial intent ($3,000), 40% LinkedIn or Meta retargeting plus a small lookalike layer ($2,000). Skip LinkedIn prospecting at this budget — $80-$140 CPMs will eat you alive before you collect enough data to optimize.
For DTC ecommerce, 55% Meta Advantage+ Shopping ($2,750) and 35% Google Shopping/PMax ($1,750) covers demand creation and demand capture. The remaining $500 goes to retargeting only — not a third prospecting channel.
For local services, this is overkill. $5K/mo on Google LSA and Search in a single metro will saturate most service categories. Cap LSA at $2,500-$3,000 and put the rest into Search with geo-fenced radius targeting.
Realistic numbers in 2025. Meta CPMs sit at $12-$22 for most B2C verticals, $25-$45 for B2B. Google Search CPCs run $2-$8 for ecommerce, $8-$25 for B2B SaaS commercial keywords, $15-$60 for legal/finance/insurance. Expect blended CPA of $40-$90 for DTC, $120-$220 for B2B SaaS trial signups, $250-$600 for SQLs. Month one performance runs 60-70% of stabilized; budget for two months of tuition before you judge anything.
Common mistakes at this tier:
- Running four channels at
$1,250each because the dashboard makes it look balanced. Each channel underfunded, none exit learning phase.
- Hiring a
$2,000/moagency on a$5K/mobudget. Forty percent of working media to overhead is a math problem, not a strategy problem.
- Refreshing creative weekly. At this volume you don't have statistical significance to judge creative weekly — refresh every
2-3 weeksminimum.
- Daily CPA panic. With
100-300 conversions/month, daily CPA bounces±40%on noise alone. Judge on rolling 7-day windows.
- Turning off campaigns that look bad in week one. The learning phase is
7-14 days. Patience is a budget multiplier.
When to scale past $5K. Three signals: (1) your best campaign is hitting daily budget cap before 6 PM for two weeks straight, (2) CPA has been stable for 30+ days and unit economics support more volume, (3) you've maxed creative iteration on existing channels — meaning you've tested at least 8-12 distinct creative concepts, not 8 minor edits of the same ad. Until all three are true, more budget mostly buys you more variance, not more growth.
Example
A Shopify skincare brand at $60K MRR allocates $2,750 to Meta Advantage+ Shopping, $1,750 to Google PMax, and $500 to Meta retargeting. Month one: 190 orders at $26 CPA, 2.3x blended ROAS. Month three after creative iteration and audience refinement: 310 orders at $19 CPA, 3.1x ROAS. Total media spend over 90 days: $15K for ~750 orders.
