B2B Lead Generation Ad Budget Planning
B2B lead gen is the only paid objective where a $400 lead can be a bargain and a $40 lead can bankrupt you. The unit you're optimizing for isn't the form fill — it's the SQL that closes 60-90 days later. Budget the channels accordingly.

The channel mix question for B2B is mostly settled in 2025, and it's not Meta. LinkedIn runs $120-$400 per lead but lets you target by job title, company size, and named account list — which is what most B2B sellers are actually buying. Google Search on bottom-funnel commercial-intent keywords (competitor comparisons, [category] software, [problem] solution) runs $80-$250 per lead and is the channel I'd start with under $8k/month because intent does the targeting work for you. Reddit is underused but legitimate for developer tools, infrastructure, security, and dev-adjacent SaaS — $40-$150 CPLs with surprisingly clean SQL rates if your offer is technical. Meta for B2B is fine for retargeting site visitors and for very wide ICPs (SMB, ecom tools, agencies). Cold prospecting on Meta for enterprise ACVs is where budgets go to die — the leads fill the form and ghost.
On bidding: the default impulse is to slap Target CPA on everything. Don't. For B2B you usually have too few weekly conversions to feed Smart Bidding properly — Google wants 30-50 conversions per 30 days per campaign before tCPA stabilizes, and most B2B accounts don't hit that on a single campaign. Run Maximize Conversions with a CPC ceiling until volume justifies tCPA. On LinkedIn, Manual CPC beats automated bidding in 8 out of 10 accounts I audit — LinkedIn's algorithm overspends to hit delivery, not quality.
The confused-goal trap on this page is the big one: teams pick B2B Lead Gen when their actual problem is Brand Awareness in a 2,000-account TAM. If your ICP is small enough to list in a spreadsheet, gated content downloads will hit the same 200 people in a quarter and burn out. The right move is air cover (LinkedIn Sponsored Content, programmatic display to firmographic audiences) plus outbound — not lead forms. Symptom: your CPL looks fine but sales says "these leads were already in our CRM."
The other trap: optimizing for MQLs when finance is measuring pipeline-sourced revenue. MQL volume is a vanity metric in 2025. The numbers that actually matter:
- MQL → SQL rate: LinkedIn typically
20-35%, Google Search25-40%, Meta cold5-15%, Reddit15-30% - SQL → Closed Won:
15-25%is healthy B2B SaaS; below10%means your targeting is too loose - Pipeline coverage: paid should source
2-4xyour quarterly target in pipeline, because most won't close
Attribution window reality: B2B sales cycles run 45-120 days for mid-market and 6-12 months for enterprise. Last-click attribution on a 30-day window will tell you LinkedIn doesn't work and your branded search is a hero. Both are wrong. Run 90-day post-impression for LinkedIn, use Google's data-driven attribution, and for anything above $50k ACV, build a self-reported attribution question into your demo form ("How did you hear about us?"). It's not clean data, but it's directionally truer than what your ad platforms will tell you.
Budget floor for serious B2B paid is roughly $8-10k/month. Below that you can run one channel well — usually Google Search on a tight keyword set — but you can't test, you can't retarget meaningfully, and you can't feed any algorithm enough conversions to optimize. Teams under that floor should spend the difference on outbound SDRs and content.
Example
A $15k ACV HR tech company runs $18k/month: $10k on LinkedIn targeting HR Directors at 50-500 employee companies (ABM list of 1,800 accounts), $6k on Google Search for category and competitor terms, $2k on retargeting. Output: ~60 MQLs, 18 SQLs, 4 closed deals/quarter. Blended CAC $4,500 against $15k ACV and 3-year LTV of $35k.
