Ad Budget Calculator for Under $500/Month

At under $500/month, you're not running a paid media program — you're buying a small amount of high-intent traffic for one specific job. This page is for solo founders, side projects, and very small local businesses where every $50 needs to produce a measurable lead or sale within 30 days.

Gut-check first. $500/month is roughly $16/day. On Google Search in most B2B verticals, that's 2-5 clicks per day. On Meta, maybe 800-1,500 impressions to a tightly-targeted audience. That is not enough volume for any algorithm to learn, exit the learning phase, or optimize toward conversions. So stop thinking like a media buyer and start thinking like someone buying a vending machine: you put $1 in, you want $2-$4 back, same day, on a known route.

This is the budget where most agencies will turn you away, and they should. If you're a B2B SaaS chasing enterprise deals, a DTC brand without an existing audience, or anyone who needs awareness — close this tab and go do content, cold outbound, or partnerships. Paid won't save you here.

Who this budget actually works for:

  • Solo service providers (lawyers, dentists, plumbers, contractors) using Google Local Services Ads — pay-per-lead, capped exposure, no algorithm to feed
  • Single-product Shopify stores with 500+ monthly visitors running Meta retargeting only
  • B2B niche tools where 3-5 keywords have under $4 CPC and clear buyer intent (e.g., "export shopify orders to csv")
  • Local event or workshop promotion in a 10-mile radius for 2-4 weeks

Channel strategy: pick one. Not two.

The defining constraint of this budget is that you cannot afford to test. Multi-channel diversification at $500 means you allocate $250 to Google and $250 to Meta, and both channels stay in learning phase forever, and you learn nothing. One channel, one campaign, one objective.

For local services, Google LSA is the default. CPL ranges $25-$80 depending on vertical (legal high, home services low), and you only pay for leads that actually call or message. No keyword research, no ad copy, no landing page.

For DTC with existing traffic, Meta retargeting only — 30-day site visitors and add-to-cart audiences. Expect $8-$20 CPMs to warm audiences and 3-6x ROAS if your product is decent. Cold prospecting is a coin flip with a stacked deck against you at this budget.

For niche B2B search, Google Search exact match with 5-15 high-intent keywords, manual CPC bidding, single ad group. Expect $3-$10 CPC and 2-5% landing page conversion to a demo or trial signup. CPA usually lands $80-$250.

What success looks like in month one. If you're spending $400-500 and you can't point to either (a) 5+ qualified leads, (b) 15+ retargeting purchases, or (c) 3+ trial signups attributable to ads, the channel is wrong or your offer is. Don't keep funding a hypothesis that hasn't returned signal in 30 days.

Common mistakes I see at this tier:

  • Running broad match keywords "to gather data" — you don't have enough budget to gather data, you have enough to convert intent
  • Turning on automated bidding (tCPA, Max Conversions) with under 30 conversions/month of history — it will torch your budget
  • Building 4 ad sets with 3 creatives each — 12 combinations splitting $500 means none of them ever exit learning
  • Running cold prospecting on Meta because "it worked for someone on Twitter"
  • Hiring an agency. Their $1,500/month retainer is 3x your media budget

When to scale beyond $500. Move up when one channel is profitably consuming every dollar you give it and you're capacity-constrained on the fulfillment side. The next meaningful step is $1,500-$2,000/month, which gets you enough conversion volume (15-30/month) to actually use Smart Bidding and add a second campaign type. Don't scale linearly to $750 — it's a no-man's-land between concentrated and diversified.

Example

A solo personal injury attorney runs $480/month on Google LSA in a single metro, 20-mile radius. Result: 7-9 qualified case calls/month at $55-$70 CPL, of which 1-2 sign as clients. With average case value of $4,000+, the math works at month one with zero optimization needed.

Tip — Before spending a dollar, write down the exact conversion event and dollar value attached to it. If you can't say "a conversion is worth $X to me" with a straight face, you're not ready for paid — at this budget you can't afford to learn that lesson the expensive way.

Questions

Is $500/month enough to test if paid ads will work for my business?
Only if your test is narrow: one channel, one audience, one offer, 30 days. It's enough to validate whether high-intent search or retargeting converts profitably for you. It is not enough to test cold prospecting, brand awareness, or any multi-channel hypothesis. If your question is "will Facebook ads work for my brand," $500 cannot answer it.
Should I use automated bidding strategies at this budget?
No. Smart Bidding strategies like Target CPA and Maximize Conversions need roughly 30 conversions in 30 days to function well, and you won't hit that volume on $500. Stick with manual CPC on Google Search and lowest-cost bidding with no automated rules on Meta. Take control back from the algorithm — at this spend, you're a better optimizer than it is.
