Pinterest Ads Character Limits & Pin Specs

Pinterest gives you more room than any other major ad platform — 100 chars for titles, 500 for descriptions. But generous limits don't mean all that text gets seen. Here's what each field actually allows, what gets clipped where, and how to write inside the constraints.

Hard limits (verified against Pinterest Business Help, 2026):

  • Standard Pin title: 100 characters
  • Standard Pin description: 500 characters
  • Video Pin title: 100 characters
  • Video Pin description: 500 characters
  • Idea Pin text overlay: 250 characters per page
  • Idea Pin title: 100 characters
  • Board name: 100 characters
  • Board description: 500 characters
  • Destination URL: 2,048 characters (no impact on display)

Shopping Pins pull title and description from the product feed (merchant.title, merchant.description). Same 100 / 500 limits apply, but the feed schema may enforce stricter caps — Google Merchant Center, for example, accepts up to 150 chars for title and 5,000 for description, so your feed will pass through Pinterest's tighter ceiling.

What happens when you exceed:

Pinterest's ad uploader (Ads Manager and the Marketing API) hard-rejects over-limit text with a validation error. You won't get truncation at upload — you'll get a red field. The truncation happens at render time on text that's *under* the limit but too long for the surface:

  • Home feed (mobile): titles clip around 30-40 chars depending on device width
  • Closeup view: full title shows, description clips at roughly 50-75 chars with a 'more' link
  • Search results grid: titles clip around 35 chars
  • Saved Pin previews on boards: titles often hidden entirely; only the image shows

So you have a 100-char limit but a ~30-char visible budget in the most common surface. Treat it like a Google RSA headline: front-load the hook.

Why the limits exist:

The 100-char title is a legacy from Pinterest's early SEO indexing — descriptions and titles feed Pinterest's internal visual search engine, and longer text gave more semantic signal. The 500-char description matches that same search-corpus logic; Pinterest is a discovery engine, and descriptions are query-matching surface area, not just ad copy. The 250 Idea Pin overlay limit is a UX cap — text larger than that breaks the readable layout on a 1080x1920 vertical canvas.

Byte vs. character gotchas:

Pinterest counts UTF-16 code units, not bytes. Practical effects:

  • A standard emoji like 🎄 = 2 code units
  • A skin-tone or compound emoji like 👩‍🍳 = 5+ code units (ZWJ sequences expand fast)
  • CJK characters = 1 code unit each, but render about 2x wider, so visible truncation hits sooner
  • Hebrew/Arabic render right-to-left; Pinterest handles bidi correctly but title clipping behavior is less predictable on mixed-script titles
  • Smart quotes from Word/Google Docs (' ") count the same but sometimes break keyword matching in Pinterest's search index — use straight quotes

Copy-fitting rules:

  • Put the search query or category in the first 30 chars of the title
  • Repeat the keyword once in the description's opening line — it's the only line most users see before tapping
  • Skip emoji in titles unless they replace a word (💸 deals not deals 💸✨🛍️)
  • Write descriptions in full sentences, not feature bullets — Pinterest's index favors natural-language matching
  • Don't rely on hashtags for reach; they were deprioritized in 2023

Trimming a 60-char headline to 30:

Original: Cozy Under-$50 Holiday Gifts for Hosts and Hostesses (52 chars, will clip in feed) Feed-safe: Under-$50 Holiday Gifts for Hosts (33 chars — still clips slightly) Tight: Holiday Host Gifts Under $50 (28 chars — keyword first, fully visible)

The full 100-char version still goes in the title field for SEO. The first 30 chars just need to stand alone.

Example

A home goods brand uploads a Pin titled Holiday Host Gifts Under $50 — Candles, Glassware & Linen Napkins from [Brand] (79 chars). In-feed, users see Holiday Host Gifts Under $50…. The description's first line — Curated host gifts under $50, ships in 2 days — handles the click decision. Remaining 455 chars feed Pinterest's search index for the next 18 months.

Tip — Pinterest Pins have a search-indexing tail of 6-18+ months, unlike Meta creatives that decay in days. Write the description as if someone will search for it next March. Repeat the head keyword once, add 2-3 related terms naturally, and skip the salesy CTAs that feel out of place in a discovery feed.

Questions

Does Pinterest count emoji and special characters against the limit?
Yes, and compound emoji eat far more than you'd expect — a family-of-four emoji can consume `11` code units. Pinterest counts UTF-16 units, so basic emoji are `2` units each. CJK characters count as `1` unit but render wider, causing earlier visible truncation. If you're localizing, test renders per language rather than trusting the character counter.
What's the difference between Standard Pin and Idea Pin character limits?
Standard and Video Pins share the same `100`-char title and `500`-char description fields, which feed Pinterest's search index. Idea Pins use a `100`-char title plus a `250`-char text overlay *per page* (up to 20 pages). Idea Pin overlay text is rendered as image, not indexed, so it doesn't help SEO — keep keywords in the title and the page captions, not just the overlay graphic.
