Snapchat Ads Character Limits & Specs

Snapchat enforces some of the tightest copy limits in the industry: 34 characters for headlines, 25 for brand name, 100 for description. Unlike Meta, there's no 'See more' expansion — copy fits or it gets rejected at upload.

The hard limits (verified against Ads Manager, 2026):

  • Brand Name: 25 characters. Appears top-left over the creative.
  • Headline: 34 characters. Applies to Single Image, Video, Story, and Collection ads.
  • Description / Subheadline: 100 characters (where supported — not all placements render it).
  • CTA: Predefined labels only. You pick from Snap's list (SHOP NOW, INSTALL NOW, WATCH, SIGN UP, LEARN MORE, BOOK NOW, ORDER NOW, DOWNLOAD, MORE, APPLY NOW). No custom CTA text.
  • Story Ads tile headline: 55 characters in the Discover feed tile, but the 34-character in-ad headline still applies once opened.
  • Collection Ads: Same 34/25 rules, plus 4 product tiles below the hero creative.

What happens when you exceed the limit

Snapchat Ads Manager hard-rejects at save time. There is no graceful truncation, no ellipsis, no See more click to expand. The field highlights red and the ad won't publish. This is different from Google (auto-truncates with …) or LinkedIn (truncates mid-word). Plan for the limit upfront — you cannot save a draft and rely on the network to shorten it.

Why these specific numbers

The 34-character headline ties to Snap's vertical 9:16 full-screen canvas. The headline renders in a single line at the bottom of the screen above the CTA swipe-up affordance. At Snap's standard system font and minimum legible size on a 1080×1920 canvas, 34 characters is the maximum that fits without wrap or auto-shrink on the smallest supported device width. The 25-character brand name has the same constraint at the top-left, where it sits next to the bitmoji/avatar.

Gotchas

  • Emoji count as multiple characters. A single emoji like 🔥 is 2 characters in Snap's counter (UTF-16 surrogate pair), and complex emoji with skin tones or ZWJ sequences (👨‍👩‍👧) can count as 5–11. Test in the editor, not in a text doc.
  • Smart quotes and em dashes (', —) count as one character but render inconsistently across older Android devices. Use straight quotes.
  • RTL languages (Arabic, Hebrew) count by character but Snap reverses the ad chrome layout — your brand name moves to top-right. Check the preview.
  • Trailing whitespace is counted. A space at the end of a 34-character headline trips the validator.
  • Line breaks are not allowed in headlines. Pasting from a doc with a hidden \n causes silent rejection in some API uploads.

Rules for fitting copy in 34 characters

  • Front-load the offer or product name. The first 15 characters do 80% of the work since the eye lands there before the swipe.
  • Numbers beat words. 50% off is 7 characters; Half price today is 16.
  • Drop articles (the, a, an) and most adjectives. They eat budget without adding meaning.
  • Use sentence case, not Title Case — easier to scan in the bottom band.
  • One claim per headline. The description field is where the proof point goes, not the headline.
  • Skip the URL. Snap auto-handles destination via the swipe-up.

Example

Original: Save 30% on our new oversized linen tees this week only (56 chars).

Trimmed: 30% off oversized linen — this week (35 — still too long).

Fits: 30% off oversized linen tees (28 chars). Brand name Linen Studio (12). Description carries the urgency: Ends Sunday. Free shipping over $50. New colors weekly. (54).

Tip — Write the headline last, after the creative is locked. The video carries the emotional load on Snap; the `34`-character headline only needs to confirm the offer or name the product. If your headline could stand alone as an ad on Google Search, it's doing too much work.

Questions

Does Snapchat truncate long copy or reject it outright?
Outright rejection at save time in Ads Manager. The field validates as you type and the publish button stays disabled until you're under the limit. There is no `…` truncation, no `See more` expansion, and no silent shortening like you get on Google or X. If you're uploading via the Marketing API, you'll get a `400` validation error on the field.
Do emojis and special characters count differently in Snapchat's character counter?
Yes. Snapchat counts using UTF-16 code units, so a basic emoji counts as `2` characters and compound emoji (skin tones, family sequences) can count as `5`–`11`. Accented Latin characters (`é`, `ñ`) count as `1`. Always paste your final copy into the Ads Manager field to confirm the count — desktop word processors give you a different number.
