TikTok In-Feed Ad Caption: 100-Character Limit Reference
TikTok's In-Feed Ad caption is capped at 100 characters total, but the visible window before the ... more truncation is closer to 50 characters on smaller devices. This page documents the exact spec, what TikTok counts, and how the caption renders on the FYP.

The hard limit: 100 characters.
TikTok Ads Manager rejects In-Feed Ad captions over 100 characters at upload — you can't push past it. The count includes spaces, punctuation, line breaks, hashtags (# symbol included), and @mentions. Standard URLs count toward the limit too, though you'd rarely include one since CTAs handle the click.
The visible window: ~50 characters.
On the FYP, captions sit above the brand name and CTA button in the lower-left of the screen. The default render shows roughly one line of text before TikTok appends ... more. On a Pixel 7 or iPhone 14, that's about 50–55 characters in English. Older or smaller devices (iPhone SE, budget Android) clip closer to 40 characters. Users can tap to expand, but on a paid In-Feed placement, almost no one does — they're scrolling, not reading.
Spark Ads behave the same way.
Spark Ads borrow from organic posts, so the underlying caption can technically be 2,200 characters. The render in-feed is identical to a standard In-Feed Ad: ~50 visible, then ... more. Don't assume the longer organic limit buys you more visibility on paid. It doesn't.
How TikTok counts characters.
- ASCII letters, digits, spaces, punctuation:
1 charactereach - Emoji: counted as
1 characterin Ads Manager's UI counter, even though they're multi-byte in storage. A 🌿 or 🔥 doesn't blow your budget the way it would on a byte-limited platform like older SMS - Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew characters:
1 charactereach in the UI counter - Combined emoji (👨👩👧 = man + woman + girl + zero-width joiners): often counted as
1in the UI but render width can be wider — test on device - Line breaks:
1 character, but break lines and you spend visible space fast
Why the 100-char cap exists.
In-Feed Ads occupy a slim left-side overlay on a vertical video. The UI is built for video-first consumption — caption is metadata, not the primary creative. TikTok caps at 100 to discourage advertisers from treating the caption like a Facebook ad headline + body. The video does the work; the caption is a secondary hook.
Common gotchas.
- Hashtag stacks eat the visible window. Five hashtags averaging 12 chars each = 60 characters. That's your entire visible portion gone before any value prop
- Smart quotes from Word/Google Docs (
'vs',"vs") paste fine but can render inconsistently across devices. Stick to straight quotes - RTL languages (Arabic, Hebrew) right-align the caption and the truncation point shifts — verify in preview
- Auto-generated captions from translation tools often run 20–30% longer than the English source. Localize, don't just translate
- The
link in bioconvention is wasted real estate on a paid In-Feed Ad — you have a real CTA button. Don't burn 12 characters on it
Writing rules for fitting copy in 50 visible characters.
- Front-load the value prop or pattern interrupt in the first
40 chars - Use one emoji max in the visible portion — visual anchor, not decoration
- Push hashtags after character 50 where they serve the algorithm but don't crowd the hook
- Avoid brand name in the caption — it's already shown beneath as the advertiser
- Cut articles (
a,the) and weak verbs (is,are) before cutting the hook
Worked example: trimming a 78-char caption to fit visible window.
Original (78 chars): Our new sensitive-skin serum is finally here and dermatologists love it 🌿
Trimmed to 47 visible chars: Sensitive skin? This serum changed mine 🌿 — then append #skincare #sensitiveskin #cleanbeauty after the visible cutoff, landing the full caption at 91 characters total.
Example
A DTC supplement brand tested two captions on the same In-Feed creative. Version A: Tired all afternoon? This 30-second fix 🔋 (42 chars visible) plus hashtags trailing. Version B: Discover our scientifically-formulated energy supplement made with... (clipped at ... more before any benefit). Version A drove 2.3x higher CTR — same video, different visible caption.
