Ad Budget Calculator for DTC Ecommerce
Ecommerce is the only business type where paid ads are the primary revenue engine on day one. Unlike SaaS or B2B, you'll know in 7-10 days whether the unit economics work. This calculator splits budget the way profitable DTC brands actually run it in 2025.

DTC ecommerce lives or dies on three numbers: AOV, contribution margin after shipping/fees, and blended ROAS. Forget MQLs, demo bookings, or pipeline — your sales cycle is measured in hours, and your attribution window should be 7-day click, 1-day view on Meta and 30-day on Google. Anything wider and you're double-counting.
The break-even ROAS for most DTC brands sits between 2.2x and 2.8x once you net out COGS (typically 25-35% of price), shipping (8-15%), payment processing (3%), and returns (5-15% depending on category). If your contribution margin after variable costs is 40%, you need 2.5x ROAS to break even on ad spend, not 1x. New founders consistently miss this.
2025 CPC and CPM ranges worth memorizing:
- Meta CPM:
$12-$35for prospecting,$25-$60for retargeting - Meta CPA (DTC average):
$18-$55depending on AOV and category - Google Shopping CPC:
$0.40-$2.50non-branded, higher in supplements, apparel, jewelry - TikTok CPM:
$6-$15, CPA$20-$45when creative is native - Pinterest CPC:
$0.30-$1.50, strongest in home, wedding, beauty, fashion
Channel mix that actually works. Meta Advantage+ Shopping is the workhorse — start with 55-65% of budget here because it converts off pure creative signal without needing a feed history. Google Shopping (Performance Max or standard Shopping) takes 25-35% but underdelivers in month one until your feed has 30+ days of conversion data and your reviews populate. TikTok gets 5-15% as an exploration budget — only run it if you can produce 4-8 native vertical videos per month. Pinterest is 5-10% and only worth it if your product photographs well in a lifestyle context.
The single biggest mistake DTC brands make: scaling Meta budget by 50%+ overnight when ROAS spikes in week two. The algorithm hasn't actually solved your funnel — you've just hit a creative honeymoon. Increase budget by no more than 20% every 3-4 days on a winning campaign, and accept that ROAS will compress 15-25% as you scale into colder audiences. A brand doing 4x at $200/day will rarely hold 4x at $2,000/day. Plan for 2.8-3.2x at scale and build your margins around that, not your peak.
What this calculator can't decide for you: whether your product, price point, and creative actually work. If your AOV is below $35, paid ads almost never pencil out without a strong subscription or repeat-purchase mechanic — your LTV has to do the heavy lifting. If your AOV is above $200, you need to budget for a 14-30 day consideration window and run dedicated retargeting, because first-touch conversions will be rare.
Track three KPIs weekly: blended ROAS (total revenue / total ad spend, ignore platform-reported ROAS), new customer CAC (use Meta's first-purchase column or Shopify's customer acquisition report), and 60-day LTV-to-CAC. If LTV:CAC after 60 days is below 1.5, your problem isn't ads — it's retention or pricing.
Example
A skincare brand with $48 AOV and $8,000/mo budget allocates $4,800 to Meta Advantage+ Shopping, $2,200 to Google Shopping (branded + non-brand), $700 to TikTok Spark Ads, $300 to Pinterest. Month one: ~190 orders at 1.9x ROAS. Month three after creative iteration and Google feed maturation: ~310 orders at 3.1x blended.
