Meta Ads (Facebook + Instagram): When It's the Right Buy

Meta is the default paid channel for visual consumer products, and there's a reason it stays the default: nothing else lets you spend $200/day on a brand-new product and get usable signal in 72 hours. But the playbook has changed enough since iOS 14.5 that most advice you'll read is stale.

Who should run Meta: DTC ecommerce with strong creative, mobile apps with visual hooks, local services with before/after content (med spa, contractors, fitness), info products, and consumer SaaS with a freemium hook. If your product photographs well or your transformation is visible, Meta will likely be your cheapest channel for new customers.

Who shouldn't: B2B with deal sizes under $10K, anything requiring high-intent search behavior (legal, emergency services, B2B SaaS targeting niche job titles), regulated categories that constantly trip the policy bot (CBD, crypto, certain supplements, employment), and any product where the buyer doesn't make impulsive decisions on a phone. LinkedIn or Google Search will outperform Meta for these every time.

What it crushes: Mid-funnel demand creation. You're showing a product to someone who wasn't looking for it and converting them in the same session. Advantage+ Shopping (ASC) is genuinely the best automated campaign type any network has shipped — for catalogs with 10+ SKUs and 50+ purchases/week, it routinely beats hand-built campaigns by 20-40%.

2025 benchmarks (US, English, broad averages — your category will vary):

  • Feed CPM: $8-$22, with apparel/beauty on the lower end and finance/insurance on the higher end
  • Reels CPM: $4-$11 (cheaper inventory, lower intent)
  • Link CPC: $0.70-$2.50
  • Ecom purchase CPA: $18-$70 for considered products, $8-$25 for impulse buys
  • Lead form CPL: $8-$40 for local services, $30-$120 for B2B-adjacent
  • ROAS expectations: 1.8-2.5x for cold prospecting, 4-8x for retargeting, blended 2.2-3.5x for healthy DTC

Meta vs TikTok: TikTok wins on cheaper CPMs ($4-$10) and Gen Z reach, but the conversion infrastructure is still 2-3 years behind. Meta's pixel + CAPI + signals stack actually optimizes; TikTok's optimization works for view-heavy objectives but stumbles on purchase events under ~30/week. If you're under $10K/month and need every dollar to perform, start on Meta. Add TikTok when you need creative diversification or your Meta CPMs stop responding to budget increases.

Meta vs Google: Different jobs entirely. Google captures existing demand — someone already typed your category. Meta creates demand — someone scrolling sees your ad and decides they want it. Most DTC brands run 60-70% Meta / 30-40% Google because Meta's volume ceiling is higher but Google's intent is purer. If you're brand-new with no search volume, Meta first. If you have an established brand getting searched, Google Brand + Shopping should run before you scale Meta.

The attribution problem: Post-iOS 14.5, in-platform reported ROAS overstates by 10-20% and understates by 15-25% depending on whether you have CAPI configured properly. Don't trust Ads Manager numbers in isolation. Run a holdout test or use a server-side measurement tool (Northbeam, Triple Whale, or even GA4 + UTMs) to ground-truth your numbers quarterly.

Budget floor: $50/day per ad set to exit learning in a week. Below $1,500/month total, Meta is genuinely hard to make work — not impossible, but you'll have one or two ad sets and very little room to learn from failures.

Example

DTC skincare brand, $8,000/month: $5,000 on Advantage+ Shopping with 6 creative concepts in the asset library, $1,800 on a broad prospecting campaign with UGC video, $700 on retargeting (90-day site visitors + ATC), $500 testing 3 new creative angles per week. Realistic month-2 outcome: 2.4x blended ROAS, ~$32 CPA, 230 orders.

Tip — If your purchase volume is under `50/week`, optimize for Add to Cart instead of Purchase — you'll get out of learning, the algorithm gets cleaner signal, and your actual purchase performance usually improves. Switch back to Purchase optimization once you're consistently above `50` weekly.

Questions

How much creative do I need to run Meta seriously?
Plan for `4-6 new creative concepts per week` once you're spending over `$5K/month`. Meta's algorithm fatigues creative fast — most ads stop performing after `1-2M` impressions. Brands that win on Meta in 2025 are functionally creative studios with ad accounts attached, not the other way around. If you can't sustain that output, cap your spend at `$3K/month` and lean on Advantage+ to recycle assets.
Why does my in-platform ROAS look great but my bank account disagrees?
Two likely culprits: view-through attribution (Meta defaults to a 1-day view window that claims credit for purchases that would've happened anyway) and missing CAPI deduplication causing double-counting. Set your reporting window to `7-day click only`, verify CAPI events match Pixel events at `>90%` in Events Manager, and compare to your Shopify/GA4 numbers weekly. The gap usually shrinks to a believable `10-15%`.
