Ad Budget Calculator for Shopify Stores
Shopify is the only ecom platform where every major ad network has native catalog sync — Meta, Google, TikTok, Pinterest, all plug-and-play. That convenience is also the trap: most stores launch broad PMax + Advantage+ on day one and burn through budget before their pixel has anything to optimize against.
Use the Ad Budget Calculator
Tell it your monthly ad spend, business type, and goal — it'll split the budget across the right networks in seconds.
Shopify DTC has its own economics that don't apply to generic ecommerce or marketplace sellers. Your AOV typically sits between $45-$120, your gross margin after COGS and shipping is usually 35-55%, and your contribution margin per order — the number that actually pays for ads — is often $15-$40. That means your target CAC for a first purchase is brutal, and you're betting on repeat purchase rate (LTV) to make the math work.
The KPI that matters most isn't ROAS — it's MER (Marketing Efficiency Ratio: total revenue / total ad spend across all channels). Platform ROAS lies. Meta will claim a 4x while your Shopify dashboard shows blended 1.8x because every channel is double-counting the same conversions. Use Shopify's first-touch and last-touch reports plus a tool like Triple Whale or Northbeam if you're spending over $15k/mo.
2025 CPC and CPM ranges for Shopify DTC:
- Meta CPM:
$12-$28(apparel/beauty higher, commodity lower) - Meta CPC:
$0.80-$2.50 - Google Shopping CPC:
$0.40-$1.80non-branded,$0.15-$0.60branded - TikTok CPM:
$6-$14, CPC$0.50-$1.50 - Pinterest CPC:
$0.30-$1.20(heavily skewed to home/wedding/beauty)
Channel mix by MRR stage:
Under $20k MRR: Meta Advantage+ Shopping only, plus branded Google Search. Don't touch PMax yet — it'll cannibalize organic and you don't have feed history.
$20k-$80k MRR: Add Google Shopping (Standard, not PMax) on your top 20% of SKUs. Start TikTok if your product is visual and your buyer skews under 35.
$80k-$300k MRR: PMax becomes viable because you finally have enough conversion data. Layer in Meta retargeting as a separate campaign (don't let Advantage+ eat your warm audiences). Klaviyo flows should be doing 25-35% of revenue at this stage — if they're not, fix email before adding paid channels.
$300k+ MRR: YouTube, connected TV, and creator partnerships start making sense as incrementality plays. At this size, the question shifts from ROAS to incremental CAC — running geo holdout tests is worth the operational cost.
The single biggest mistake Shopify operators make: treating creative as an afterthought. Once your catalog is synced and pixel is firing, the only variable left is creative. Brands scaling past $100k/mo in ad spend are shipping 15-30 new creatives per week, not running the same UGC video for six months. If you can't produce 4-6 net-new ad concepts monthly, you'll plateau around $25k/mo in spend regardless of how good your product is.
The second-biggest mistake: ignoring post-purchase. A $60 AOV brand with a 15% 90-day repeat rate has a wildly different ad budget ceiling than the same brand with a 35% repeat rate. Before you raise spend, raise LTV — bundle, subscribe-and-save, post-purchase upsells. Every $1 of LTV you add gives you $1 more headroom on CAC.
Example
A skincare brand at $95k MRR, $68 AOV, 42% margin, 28% 90-day repeat rate. Budget: $14k/mo split $8k Meta Advantage+, $3k Google Shopping, $2k TikTok Spark Ads, $1k branded search. Blended MER 2.6x, first-order CAC $32 (breakeven on order 1, profitable by order 2). Scaling lever: 12 new UGC creatives shipped monthly via a $2k/mo creator retainer.
