Snapchat Ads Strategy & Budget Guide

Snapchat is a tactical buy, not a primary channel. It works hard for a narrow set of advertisers — DTC brands selling to teens, mobile games, regional QSR — and burns money fast for everyone else. The question isn't whether Snapchat is good. It's whether your buyer is on Snapchat with intent.

Snapchat's user base is real but specific: roughly 414M daily active users globally, with the US audience heavily concentrated in the 13-24 bracket. The platform is messaging-first, which matters more than it sounds. Users open the app to talk to friends, not to discover brands. That changes everything about what works.

Who should run Snapchat ads:

  • DTC brands with AOV under $60 selling to teens and early-20s (streetwear, beauty, accessories, energy drinks)
  • Mobile game and consumer app advertisers chasing cheap installs at scale
  • QSR and food delivery with regional store-locator goals
  • Entertainment (film, music, streaming) launching to a young audience
  • Brands running AR try-on (lenses are Snapchat's actual moat — nobody else does this as well)

Who should not:

  • Anything B2B
  • Considered purchases over $200 (furniture, financial services, SaaS)
  • Brands targeting 35+ — the inventory exists but it's thin and expensive relative to Meta
  • Anyone without short-form vertical video already in production. Static creative dies here.

2025 benchmarks I see consistently across accounts:

  • CPM: $2.50-$8 for broad reach, $8-$15 for tight targeting
  • CPC: $0.50-$2.00
  • App install CPA: $2-$7 for casual games, $8-$20 for fintech/dating
  • Ecommerce CPA: $15-$45 depending on AOV and creative quality
  • ROAS: 1.5-2.8x is realistic; anything above 3x usually means you found product-market-fit with a lens or AR experience

Snapchat vs TikTok is the comparison that matters. TikTok beats Snapchat on almost every metric for brand discovery — its For You algorithm pushes content to non-followers, while Snapchat's social graph is closed. But Snapchat wins on three things: AR lens campaigns (no real TikTok equivalent), cheaper CPMs for direct-response when TikTok inventory is overheating, and a more locked-in teen audience in specific US markets. If you only have budget for one, run TikTok. If you have both running and TikTok CPAs are climbing, Snapchat is your pressure-release valve.

Vs Meta: Meta's targeting and measurement are in a different league. The reason to add Snapchat on top of Meta is incremental reach to a younger demo Meta increasingly under-indexes on, plus the lens format. Don't expect Snapchat to replace Meta — expect it to add 10-20% incremental volume on a youth-focused campaign.

Signature use case: AR lens activations tied to a product launch. A beauty brand launches a lipstick, builds a try-on lens, runs paid distribution to push lens plays, and converts users who shared or saved the lens. This is the campaign type where Snapchat outperforms every other network — including TikTok — because the platform's camera-first design makes lens engagement feel native rather than gimmicky.

Creative reality: you need 6-10 second vertical videos, sound-on, hook in the first 2 seconds, and ideally 4-8 variants per ad set. Snapchat's algorithm needs creative volume to find winners. Brands that ship one ad and walk away always blame the platform. The platform isn't the problem — the creative volume is.

One more thing: Snapchat's pixel and SKAN reporting are noisier than Meta's. Build in a 15-25% post-purchase survey lift expectation. The platform under-reports conversions.

Example

A streetwear brand with $3,000/month ran $2,000 to single-image/video DR ads (8 creative variants), $700 to a branded AR lens for a hoodie drop, and $300 to story ads retargeting lens engagers. Result: 185 orders at $28 AOV avg, 2.1x ROAS reported, plus 40K lens shares driving organic lift the pixel didn't capture.

Tip — Build the AR lens before you build the ad. Snapchat's paid auction rewards lens-based campaigns with lower CPMs and higher engagement, and the lens itself becomes earned media when users share it. Skipping the lens is leaving the platform's only real advantage on the table.

Questions

Can Snapchat replace TikTok in my media mix?
No, and you shouldn't try. TikTok is a discovery engine; Snapchat is a messaging app with ad inventory grafted on. They serve different jobs. Run TikTok as your primary youth channel and add Snapchat when you have an AR lens concept, when TikTok CPAs are climbing past your ceiling, or when you specifically need US teen reach that TikTok's algorithm is missing.
Why are my Snapchat conversions so much lower than Meta's for the same spend?
Three reasons. First, intent — Snapchat users are mid-conversation with friends, not browsing for products like on Meta. Second, attribution — Snapchat's pixel and SKAN signals are weaker, so you're under-reporting actual conversions by `15-25%`. Third, creative — Meta forgives mediocre static ads, Snapchat does not. If your Snapchat creative isn't native vertical video with sound, you're paying for impressions nobody watched.
