TikTok Ads: When It Works, When It Burns Cash

TikTok rewards creative that feels like a friend's video, not an ad. If your team can ship 6-10 native-feeling vertical videos per month, it's the cheapest paid social inventory you'll find. If you can't, your CPMs will look fine and your CPAs will be a disaster.

Who should run TikTok Ads in 2025:

  • DTC brands with a visual product (beauty, apparel, food, home, gadgets) under $80 AOV
  • Mobile apps targeting users under 35, especially gaming, dating, fintech, and creator tools
  • Founder-led brands where someone on the team is willing to be on camera
  • Anyone with a back catalog of organic TikToks getting 10k+ views — Spark Ads on those is the highest-leverage paid social play right now

Who should not:

  • B2B SaaS with deal sizes over $5k/year (the audience exists but intent doesn't)
  • Local services without a national or large-metro footprint — geo-targeting works but is thin below city level
  • Brands whose entire creative library is product photography and 16:9 video. You will spend 60% of your TikTok budget producing assets, not buying media. Plan for that or don't start.
  • Anyone over $45 AOV with a >7-day consideration cycle. TikTok is impulse-driven; it's not where someone researches a mattress for three weeks.

2025 benchmarks (in-feed, US, broad targeting):

  • CPM: $6-$14 for ecom, $10-$20 for app installs, $15-$30 for finance/insurance verticals
  • CPC: $0.80-$2.50 typically, vs Meta's $1.50-$4
  • Ecom CPA: $25-$80 depending on AOV and creative quality
  • Android app install CPI: $1.50-$4. iOS: $4-$10 post-ATT
  • ROAS: 1.5x-2.5x is realistic month one. 3x+ shows up around month 3 once the algo has 50+ conversions to learn from

TikTok vs Meta — the actual tradeoff:

Meta's targeting and measurement are still meaningfully better. Meta's pixel + CAPI + Advantage+ will out-attribute TikTok's pixel almost every time, which means TikTok looks worse than it is in your dashboard. Run a holdout test or use post-purchase surveys — most brands underestimate TikTok's true contribution by 20-40%.

Where TikTok wins: top-of-funnel reach is dramatically cheaper, creative volume goes further (one viral hook can carry a campaign for 6 weeks), and audiences under 28 are checked out of Meta. Where Meta wins: retargeting, lookalikes off first-party data, and any audience over 45.

Don't think of it as TikTok OR Meta. Think of TikTok as a creative discovery layer — it's where you find the hook, the angle, the format that works — then you scale the winners on Meta where the targeting infrastructure is more mature.

Campaign types that actually work:

  • Spark Ads on organic posts that already performed — the highest CTR you'll get on the platform, often 2-3x standard in-feed
  • Creator whitelisting — paying a creator $500-$3k for a video, then running it as a Spark Ad from their handle
  • VSA (Video Shopping Ads) for catalog-based ecom — the closest TikTok has to a DPA equivalent and the auction is still under-competed
  • App campaigns with the SKAN/AEM setup done correctly — most app advertisers leave 30% performance on the table by not configuring this

What doesn't work: static images, repurposed YouTube ads, anything with a corporate VO, talking-head testimonials that look filmed in an office. The platform algorithmically buries content that looks like an ad even if it's paid placement.

Example

A skincare brand at $3,000/month: $1,800 on Spark Ads boosting their best 4 organic posts from the past 60 days, $900 on creator-whitelisted videos from 2 micro-influencers, $300 retargeting site visitors with a UGC review compilation. Expect 100-180 orders at $22-$28 CPA, 2.0-2.4x ROAS month one.

Tip — Your creative refresh cadence on TikTok is 2-3 weeks, not 6 like Meta. Fatigue hits fast because the same user sees your ad 4-6x in a week. Build a creative pipeline that produces at least 4 new videos per week before you scale spend past `$5k/month`.

Questions

How does TikTok Ads attribution compare to Meta?
Worse, materially. TikTok's pixel + Events API setup is less mature, and post-iOS 14 the platform leans heavily on modeled conversions. Expect TikTok's reported ROAS to understate true contribution by 20-40%. Run incrementality tests or use post-purchase surveys ("how did you hear about us?") to get the real number before you cut budget based on dashboard ROAS alone.
Can I run TikTok Ads without making TikTok-native creative?
Technically yes, practically no. Repurposed Reels work okay (same vertical format, similar audience behavior). YouTube ads and static images get crushed — CTR drops 60-80% and the algo deprioritizes you in the auction. If you don't have native creative capacity in-house, budget `$500-$2,000/month` for a UGC creator or small agency producing 4-8 videos monthly. Without that, skip the platform.
